1850-80. The first tea gardens were established in New Zealand, among them the notorious Vauxhall Tea Garden in Dunedin. The garden was always a little outrageous: there were rifle and archery ranges, salt water baths complete with a spectator stand and organised jousting events. The garden came under fire for apparently serving hard liquor and allowing prostitution and ‘debauchery on a grand scale’. Yeah … it was eventually closed down.
