Tea With Hayley

Tea With Hayley

From Ash:

I first had the pleasure of meeting Hayley last year when she and her husband came into the Tea Shop in Tauranga on one of their weekly date days. This piqued my interest straight away, as did her sunny demeanour. From that initial interaction, we fast became supporters of one another. Hayley, a dedicated naturopath, went on to supply each and every client with a warming cup of Webster’s and a little sample to take home.

Being a mum of two, I felt it was time I filled my own cup and went to visit Hails for myself. So off Penny and I went for our own consultation, and she definitely delivered on practical nutritional guidance and a delicious cup of Blood Orange.

Hey Hails! Tell us a little bit about yourself…

I was born and raised in Putaruru, and we moved to Papamoa almost 9 years ago as we wanted to give our girls the beach life. I live with my hubby Karl, our two daughters Holly (17) and Bella (11), and one very smoochy, rather round ginger cat called Puss. I love creating nourishing food in my creative kitchen, reading, running, jumping in the ocean all year round, drinking bubbles in the sun, and lying in bed with a fabulous cup of tea!

We first met you as a customer. You popped into our Tea Shop in Te Puna with your husband, on a date day I believe. Can you tell us a little bit about these dates, please?

Karl and I have always had really intense businesses, so once Bella started school, we decided to commit to one day a week for us. At the moment, we currently own BP 2 Go Leamington in Cambridge. Karl travels there 3-4 times a week, whilst I do all the admin and run my naturopathic clinic. Date day usually consists of tea in bed, a barefoot beach walk (weather permitting), then coffee and a delicious lunch and bubbles, often at Alpino’s or Lantern, then home in time for Bella, finished with a spa before dinner.

How did you come to be a naturopath and start Naturopathy by Hails?

I started seeing a naturopath at age 16 as I had terrible acne. I loved her and naturopathy, so that was the beginning. I went to Victoria Uni in Wellington for a BA in history, which taught me amazing research skills crucial for my learning as a naturopath. After having Holly via IVF and then Bella, I started studying naturopathy. My typical day includes getting Bella sorted, exercising, seeing clients, making remedies, doing orders, answering queries, taking Bella to dance, and cooking good food. This year marks 10 years since I gained my qualification.

Since popping into the store, we are in touch regularly. You’ve become a real advocate of ours, thank you! What is it about tea that you enjoy?

I love tea. If it’s caffeine-free, it’s a great way to boost hydration. The ritual of tea is very calming and aids nervous system function. I love to serve Webster’s tea in the clinic and send clients away with a sample. For me, having a cup of tea is pause time, and that is something we all need more of!

We’ve recently released our Cold Remedy tea. A limited release winter tea designed to soothe the ills and chills. Given your background, how would the ingredients help someone battling a cold?

I love this! When battling ills and chills, hydration is crucial, and something hot like tea is comforting. Eucalyptus is fabulous for its decongestant properties and anti-microbial abilities. Lemon grass has anti-inflammatory properties, while apple and lemon provide vitamin C, and coconut gives a rich depth of flavour. This tea is loaded with antioxidants and is a great addition to your wellness regime.

Lastly, if you could have a cup of tea with anyone, who would it be?

My dad! I would give anything to have one more cup with my dad. He passed away in October last year. Dad really encouraged my naturopathic journey; we shared the same star sign, Gemini, and he was the calm to my storm and loved different teas. His advice was always on point.

Thanks so much, Haley!
